Somewhere in the Middle East
The little girl felt something coarse under her fingers. She opened her eyes slowly. As they came into focus, she noticed she lay atop rubble. Dirt and grime covered her brown skin. Concrete and exposed rebar covered her vision.
Where was she? What happened?
She tried to move, but nothing. Why? Why couldn’t she move? Her eyes darted around; she couldn’t see anyone nearby. Again, she tried to shift, but nothing.
Her breathing sped up as fear seeped in. What had happened? She wanted to leave! She wanted to see her family!
She began pushing the concrete slabs in front of her. At first, they were firm, yet as she removed some smaller ones, the larger ones lost their hold. A pile of dust swept over her as the debris fell beside her. The night sky now revealed itself to her, but it did not bring comfort nor light to the young child.
There was no moon; there were no stars. Only darkness.
Tears started to stream down her cheeks as she gazed helplessly around her. Where was everybody?
Was she forgotten?
Curiously, a light began shining on her face—almost as if the sun decided to rise earlier than usual. It continued to get brighter and brighter. The girl turned her gaze toward it and peered up; her green eyes opened wide.
She blinked several times to make sure this wasn’t a dream. A woman with wings was descending down, looking directly at the girl. The wings shone in golden, holy light around her. The woman had blonde hair and was wearing white armor accented with an orange and gold-colored sash. A strange looking staff was in her right hand. To top it off, she had a golden metal ring around her head, shining like her beautiful wings.
An angel?
No. A woman...
The little girl remained speechless. The woman gave a wonderful, peace-filled smile and extended her left, gloved hand toward the girl.
“Don’t be afraid...” the ambassador of Heaven said unto her.
“...I will watch over you!”
